Caleb Pike VCL

Had a better race today. I finally managed to get some points! i think i came in 6th.

The pace generally was not too high, Marcel managed to break clear from the group with 5 laps or so remaining and stayed clear till the end with a gap of 30 seconds.

Coming into the final hill we were still in a massive bunch gunning for second so there was lots of potential for a disaster. Raf hit a traffic cone, flew into the middle of the pack, sideways. I'm not sure how no one went down.

I'll try and find some pictures to post later, these pictures are from the following race. Same course though so they'll do!

Island Cup MTB #4 Hammerfest

Parksville today for an MTB race.

It was a short course today, only 16.5km and only 1 lap. That would be good you might think but it just means you have to ride faster.

I got off to a good start, managed to miss any hold ups funneling into the first single track section, so enjoyed the narrow sections through the trees. This was the one part of the course that we'd had time to pre-ride.

After about 15 minutes of nice windy, and slightly down hill narrow stuff we came out onto the logging road ready for the big climb (by reputation tough enough to justify the single lap format). Wat a climb it is too, from 150m up to over 400m in about 1km of riding.

The rather unfortunate reward for such a climb was a rough and loose logging road decent. This however, about half way down, was replaced by a freshly cut and fairly old school portion of the course. It was difficult to ride smoothly but felt good when you did get sections right. It was down by the Englishman river, lots of twists and turn with some steep little ups thrown in. Once i was over the leg pain of the pace we were trying to keep up it made me smile.

Here are some graphs and a map of what was going on. I'm still waiting to find out what the results were, it think they are okay though.

As an extra note, Halldor had a storming race and came 2nd in his category, superb!

Bring on the next one at Duncan.

Newton Heights race

Newton Heights tonight was hard work. I managed to stay sheltered for the majority of the ride and worked as hard as i could. That hill gets pretty hard after 12 times or so. Strength wise i felt good but in the last few laps i was suffering from cramp in my calves.

We had a nice little group of 4 of us but in ended up rolling in at the end of that group. Getting faster though, i think...

results up to 10th spot here (i was 12th A)

On a GPS note, i managed to figure out the auto lap count, and it worked perfectly.

Pro City Racing Monday ride

Went up Prospect Lake road and then up to the observatory this week. As we were coming down the hill we met up with the Riders Cycles group. The rid eback home along interurban was more fun with more people. Good times.

Hartland commute

I have finally done the MTB route up into the Harland area with my GPS. Although i'm not sure exactly how representative of actual timings this one is, we were up there for a 4 hour trail building session.

In any case the maps shows from the car park at the trail heads back to the Trek Victoria bike store.

#3 Cumberland MTB race

Here is a map of the course. The technical single track, which was probably around 75% of the course kept the average speeds down.

We went up to pre ride the lap on saturday, I had fancied racing my 29er but half way up the climb on the second lap the freehub body gave up. With 29" wheels still not being that common i didn't manage to get a replacement in time so used the more conventional Santa Cruz Superlight.

Raceday was fun, the weather was perfect, the first summers day in about 6 months. There were still plenty of puddles and mud in the shade of the trees.

As a group we were mostly successful.
I finished 18th in expert,
Scotty was 2nd in intermediate,
Regan was 3rd in intermediate,
Chrys was 4th in Beginner,
and Dee had a big crash.

50k elk lake loop

Rode this loop tonight, the only difference is cutting onto the Goose trail at the end of Interurban, highway #1 crossing. Google maps doesn't seem to know you can do that! Also it's possible to do this route after work now without needing lights, all good.
